According to a recent article on Mashable.com, an internal Google document was obtained by Ad Age that details the companies spending the most of Google AdWords in June 2010. While the biggest spending companies (AT&T Mobility, Amazon, eBay, and BP) may not be surprising, the amounts these companies are spending are truly staggering.
Supporting the release of the iPhone 4, AT&T Mobility claimed the top spot spending just over $8 million on search ads. Remember, that’s just for one month.
Here are the top 10 spenders in June 2010:
- AT&T Mobility – $8.08 million
- Apollo Group (University of Phoenix) – $6.67 million
- Expedia – $5.95 million
- Amazon – $5.85 million
- eBay – $4.25 million
- BP – $3.59 million
- Hotels.com – $3.30 million
- JC Penney – $2.46 million — we’ll admit, this one surprises us
- Living Social – $2.29 million
- ADT Security – $2.19 million
How much did you spend each month on Google AdWords?

I don’t spend money on Google AdWords but this is an interesting list! I’m wondering, is it worth it? Do these companies profit from traffic they generate with AdWords?
Great question Marijan. What do you think? Would you spend millions of dollars a month for something that wasn’t giving you a good return on your investment? I think the numbers tell the story. While there is certainly value in branding, these companies are clearly profiting from their online marketing efforts. Another important thing this level of spending points out is the need to track conversion. If these companies couldn’t say definitively that their AdWords campaigns were profitable, they wouldn’t scale them to these levels.
You didnt mention the real #1 in June. That is AT&T with over 8 million dollars. And where is BP with over 3.5 million??
Once again Mashable proofs to be not reliable. Too bad
At&T is mentioned in both the Mashable article as well as mine. I’ve updated the bulleted list to include AT&T and BP.
Oh was it? Sorry, I already readed it that’s why I didn’t go through the whole article. Good you updated it
Mashable is not my favorite, you would have guessed that
Just wait until China buys godaddy.

Then the money will really fly for advertising.
Good to know these numbers. So AT&T is spending close to 100 million dollars per year at Adwords alone. I wonder how much they spend on the internet?
Btw, it is sad to know that Google isn’t much in favor of affiliate marketers.
Thank you for sharing this interesting list. I work for a fortune 500 company as a SEO person, and the PPC department does spend millions of dollars every month for Paid search program (mainly Google Adword). The point they want to make is SERP domination, or industry market share domination.
